describe virgin mary’s During her legendary stage performance, Hathaway immersed herself in grueling dance training with the film’s choreographer Danny Vitale, known for his work with Rihanna, Katy Perry and Halsey. “Oh God no! Dancing is no It’s easy for me,” Hathaway said Fashion Laughed. “Dance was a talent I wished I had. Growing up, I tried a lot. I went to class almost every day after school, but I never progressed. I made peace with myself not being a dancer, and then this part came. I had a lot of help from Danny. It was challenging, but I had to pretend to be a dancer; it was a dream I had wanted to achieve since I was a kid.”
Hathaway also sang original songs by Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff as well as FKA twigs in the film. To create a true spectacle, Lowery staged a concert sequence similar to that of Taylor Swift’s Reputation Stadium Tour, which required Hathaway to perform in front of 400 extras. “Once I got into it, it was really, really fun. It gave me a lot of energy,” she said. “I knew this was going to be something I would never do again, so I tried to enjoy every minute of it.”
There was no shortage of elaborate costumes, either, which required Hathaway to gracefully fly around in a cape and heels, strapped into a corset and with a giant halo above her head. These headdresses are a staple of her live performances and the general mystique created by Coel’s persona. Playing the designer is deeply personal for the British star, whose mother is a seamstress. “When I was little, everything I wore on the red carpet was made by my mom. And my mom made the clothes she wears on the carpet now,” Coel, wearing Givenchy, said, pointing to her mother. “So I learned a lot from her, but I didn’t learn enough to make her proud — trust me.”
