6 Genius Hair Hacks That Changed How I Care for My Hair

Growing up, I had honey-colored hair that was straight and thin, as long as Rapunzel’s hair. I was jealous of my sisters’ bouncy blonde curls, so I would wait in my mom’s bathroom, pulling out her Clairol Custom CareSetter electric hot curling iron and Aussie Sprunch hairspray from the cabinet and begging her to curl my hair. Eventually she said yes, and the result left me feeling even more glamorous: My normally flat length had somehow transformed into the shiny, bouncy, voluminous curls of my dreams.

Looking back, this transition was the beginning of my obsession with hair. I’ve tried every hairstyling trick you mentioned: I’ve straightened my hair with an iron when I didn’t have one; I’ve dyed my hair red, chestnut brown, and black; and, of course, I’ve cut my own bangs. I put a lot of thought into pursuing the feeling of a beautiful hairstyle.

Luckily, I’ve met many hair experts throughout my career who have helped bring my hair back to life. From restoring my hair the next day to washing it properly, I’ve learned a few simpler-than-ever tips that have revolutionized the way I care for my hair—enhancing my everyday shine, texture, vibrancy, and shine. Here are all my best tips to make every day a great hair day.

Spray and scrunch hair the next day

Straight out of the shower, without any styling, my hair was dry and lifeless, with no visible waves. I found the perfect combination of products to create natural-looking waves; but unfortunately, by day two, it was back to square one. While I typically use a curling wand or curling iron to add volume to my curls, celebrity hairstylist and founder of RŌZ Hair Care Products Mara Roszak gave me a tip for getting those textured curls back: Mix leave-in conditioner and (filtered) water in a spray bottle and apply thoroughly, working my hair through the spray as I go.

“My go-to ratio is about three to four pumps of Milk Hair Serum to about four ounces of water,” explains Roszak. “You want it to be concentrated enough so that your hair absorbs the weightless moisture, which helps rejuvenate your hair for the next day.” To further enhance your look, Roszak says to apply a root texturing spray (like her Root Lifting Spray) directly to your roots and use crease-free clips to hold it in place. Not only does it extend the life of my style, it also keeps my hair hydrated and frizz-free, which helps minimize regular breakage and results in fuller, longer hair.
