On January 11, the 83rd annual Golden Globe Awards will celebrate the best moments in television and film this year. While the 2026 nominations slate is filled with shockers and snubs, the highly anticipated event is sure to bring a variety of exciting eveningwear looks to the red carpet. To commemorate this spectacle, Fashion Take a look back at some of the most memorable gowns from dazzling ceremonies and repeat.
Since the first Golden Globe Awards in 1944, the awards show has spawned a plethora of fashion moments that have stood the test of time. The focus in those early years was the glamor of Old Hollywood: in 1957, Elizabeth Taylor looked ethereal in an embroidered gown, crown, and knocker earrings. Later, in 1962, Marilyn Monroe accepted the Henrietta Award in an emerald sequin style.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the “more is better” mentality swept the carpet. In 1973, Sonny and Cher appeared in Studio 54, with Cher wearing heavy furs and trendy midriff-baring suits. In 1987, singer Melba Moore attended an event in a red puff-shouldered gown that could easily be seen on the Valentino runway today.
In the 1990s, gown silhouettes became more serious and simple. In 1999, Angelina Jolie wore a simple tank dress covered in silver sequins. (A woman ahead of her time, she even paired it with square-toe sandals.) In the early ’00s, female celebrities began favoring flowy, romantic dresses and delicate straps. Take Halle Berry in 2003, who wore one of her best red carpet looks to date – a pale blue dress with body-hugging pleats.
