How Kristen Stewart Crafted Her ‘Sophisticated but Rebellious’ Cannes Style—According to Stylist Tara Swennen

Since her first appearance at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012, actor and director Kristen Stewart has become one of the main guests on the event’s red carpet. Attending the event brings a high sense of glamor and luxury, and over the years she and stylist Tara Swennen have been up to the challenge, launching many, many Unforgettable looks – from silver Chanel couture (she famously ditched her Louboutins that year!), to pink tweed skirt suits. “I love Cannes because it’s a world stage and it attracts more attention than many other festivals or red carpets,” Swinnan said Fashion. “Aside from the Oscars – and I do think there’s a little bit of restraint there – Cannes really has a blend of glamor, art and beauty. People really jump at the chance to shine.”

This year, Stewart and Swinnan are gearing up to launch another Cannes-winning outfit to match Stewart’s buzzy new project. In town to promote a Quentin Dupieux movie Quan PhilStewart hit the Cannes Film Festival this weekend in two eye-catching, vibrant outfits for “The Movie,” starring alongside Woody Harrelson and Emma Mackie.

As enduring ambassadors for Chanel, it’s no surprise that they’re both favored by the French brand. “Kristen, Chanel and Matthieu Blazy have a beautiful relationship because she activates his work in different ways,” Swennen said. “He’s definitely loosened up Chanel a little bit. When you look at his clothes, the tweeds are a little lighter, the cuts are looser, the silhouettes feel less stiff and dated. That’s the arena in which Christian likes to live.”

Stewart hit the Cannes Croisette for the first time during this weekend’s film photoshoot, which saw her wearing a sheer gray “tweed” top and skirt from Chanel’s Spring 2026 Haute Couture collection. “It’s a lighter take on classic tweed. It has frayed edges and jeweled buttons – we love the sophistication and sheer tension of it,” says Swennen. Although it appears to be completely transparent, it turns out that this is just an optical illusion. “It actually had these little boy shorts underneath it and a little dainty camisole, so it looked more revealing than it actually was,” Swinnan said.

Later in the evening, Stewart slipped into a more evening-ready option—a red and black knitted Chanel gown from Blazy’s Fall 2026 collection. “I love the color. We just threw it on and it fit perfectly,” Swennen said. “It has these delicate crochet leaves. It feels very Chanel—but also very modern and cool.”
