Although I love reading, I am a picky bookworm. In order for me to read a new book properly, the light has to be bright enough to protect my eyes, but dark enough to relax. There can be no clutter or false noise around me. I have to have a drink that’s ice cold, or one that’s piping hot enough that I can see steam coming out of the cup. The surface I sit on must support my lower lumbar spine and Stay cozy – a blanket helps – and the mood is usually better when candles flicker in the distance. Too much to ask for? It’s true, but I’ve found it’s a secret to extending my attention span, and it must be important.
Creating an atmosphere conducive to long reading is not the be-all and end-all (pardon the pun) of a novel. The correlation between uncomfortable circumstances and the urge to put down the book is very clear. While not every reader needs the same squeamish combination of factors to sit back and soak in, there’s no denying the appeal of atmosphere—so I’ve put together a short shopping list to guide you with your own reading nook ideas.
