On Sunday afternoon, just hours before the Super Bowl, members of the Vogue Book Club gathered at the SVA Theater in Chelsea for a special preview screening of Vogue. Wuthering Heightsfollowed by an insightful conversation between directors Emerald Fennell and Chloe Through.
Drawing on literary scholarship and her own memories of the book as a teenager, Fennell chose to delve into its sadomasochistic undercurrents. As she explains, “Quoting Daphne du Maurier, in which she describes Wuthering Heights As an asexual book. But I have never experienced anything like this. That’s part of the magic of fiction—everyone who reads it comes away with something slightly different. To me, the dynamic of sexual power is extremely obvious. “
Fennell’s version differs from the classical text in several notable ways. Isabella Linton (played by Alison Oliver) became a more dynamic character (Fennell joked that she herself was “more Isabella than Cathy”), and the adaptation omitted Nelly’s first-person narration and the second half of the novel (William Wyler did it first!). Perhaps the most memorable addition, however, is the theme of eggs crushed under the sheets – an inside joke between Heathcliff and Cathy. Fennell revealed that she volunteered to sit on the egg during filming.
Earlier in the episode, Chloe and Chioma look back at two iconic covers released this week: Powerful pop star Rosalía (Chloe’s first print issue) Fashion) and Bhavitha Mandava, the latest model to take over the fashion industry. Chloe also previewed the New York Fashion Week schedule, stressing that Rachel Scott’s Proenza Schouler show was worth a look, while Chioma recounted her morning, which included breakfast with Jill Biden.
