DJI today revealed a long-rumored dual-lens version of its popular compact camera at an event in Cannes, where the iconic film festival also takes place. In attendance were several award-winning videographers, film industry insiders, and select media like myself.

It is worth noting that this is not an official launch of the product, but a trailer for people in the film industry, because the DJI Pocket 4P aims to be a small movie camera. Full specs are still embargoed, but the Pocket 4P restores the 1-inch sensor from the DJI Pocket 4, complete with a secondary camera that offers a longer focal length. The Pocket 4P also supports 17 stops of dynamic range, an industry-leading number not just in a compact camera but in any camera.

The new camera also brings version 2 of the DJI LOG video format, called DJI LOG 2, which allows for a wider range of lighting and tonal adjustments in post-production.

As I mentioned in my review of the single-lens DJI Pocket 4, the DJI Pocket is the camera I see the most at tech events because its small size makes it a great content creation machine. With the Pocket 4P’s additional lenses and superior dynamic range, it will further expand content creation capabilities.

In my opinion, with the second zoom lens, the camera ceases to be just a vlogging camera (where you tend to film your own face) and becomes a proper camera with the lens facing forward.

The pocket camera wars are heating up, with DJI rival Insta360 preparing to launch a similar camera. But as a pioneer in this category, DJI should have advantages in terms of brand awareness and accessory ecology. An official release of the Pocket 4P has not yet been announced, but it should happen soon – perhaps before the end of May.
