This is October 4, 1992, in Milan. At just 18 years old, young Kate Moss is in her first runway season. She made her debut in Milan in the Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 1993 collection, a show filled with ’70s-style bell-bottoms, colorful patchwork suits, bug-eye sunglasses and wild feather-embellished hats. The show will go down in history for its blend of hippie and grunge influences and the fact that it elevated Moss from fashion darling to supermodel. (Before that, she worked mostly on campaigns.) “I think I just met Naomi and Christy,” Moss told Fashion Dolce & Gabbana show. “That was the beginning of many years of fashion fun.”
33 years later, one of the world’s most famous models and fashion icons has walked hundreds, if not thousands, of runways. Her hair was coiffed into countless shapes, her makeup had every color on the palette, and her 5-foot-7 body was adorned in fabrics that have shaped what we wear for decades to come. On top of that, today is the supermodel’s 52nd birthday.
So what better way to celebrate than to look back at some of the candid, coolest moments backstage throughout the golden era of modeling throughout the ’90s – from John Galliano’s pivotal Spring/Summer 1994 collection to Miu Miu’s minimalist Spring/Summer 1996 collection. Happy birthday, Kate Moss!
