Around 2013, I met Anna at 4 Times Square, the culmination of a week of interviews (six interviews, including one with OG beauty queen Sarah Brown). With little dry clean styling left, I ignored the misinformation about best practices for the occasion (Spend over $20,000 on a stylist! Go blonde! Blow out! No pants!) and followed the logic: It’s best to look like myself.
More than ten years later, I still insist on this. From bottom to top: silver Elizabeth & James pumps; sky blue ankle-length cigarette pants from Buffalo Exchange East Village; white button-down shirt from Moda Operandi wardrobe; and a sheer striped Isabel Marant mohair sweater that Laura Vidrequin Roso lent me. I pulled my hair up into a top bun, did my makeup with Tom Ford winged eyeliner, applied pink BareMinerals blush (probably a lip to match the mood), tousled my side bangs, then got out of the car a few blocks away and walked through the snowdrifts to arrive on time— Fashionit’s still early.

I know my first interview will be with fashion weddingso I got ready that morning as if I were going to a late August wedding in Charleston: a silk orchid purple Ralph Lauren Collection midi dress, pink Ferragamo Pola pumps, and pearl stud earrings. As I cheered myself up in the hallway, Grace Coddington gave me a friendly smile, which seemed like a good sign. This reminds me – it’s time to take that piece of clothing out of the closet and wear it again.

I’m searching my iCloud archives from October 2015, but apparently I didn’t record what I wore Fashion Interviews—yes, plural; I believe I took six photos in total—probably because I was too nervous to even think about capturing the moment before boarding the Metro-North line into Manhattan. (It was a different time!)
All I know is that the only real “designer” items I owned at the time were the printed denim pants I picked up from the sample cabinet during Nicole Miller’s college internship, and the Proenza Schouler PS1 backpack I picked up at an employee sale the summer after graduation. I’m a big fan of long, thin scarves (Hedi Slimane Saint Laurent SS15), so my best guess is that I paired this black scarf from Zara with a blazer and a white button-down shirt. Things haven’t changed much!

I wore a rustic white cotton dress—ruffled sleeves and embroidered bodice—that I picked up on sale at Banana Republic. I finished the look with a black velvet bow, which I thought looked very coquettish. In fact, I probably look more like Samantha, the American Girl doll.

My job interview took place during the pandemic, so luckily for me, I didn’t really need to dress up. But I did have a problem: Because my school decided not to have a graduation ceremony, my friends and I went straight to Miami. I remember I had a really bad sunburn that lasted until September…and didn’t have the right clothes Fashion Interviewing Nicole Phelps and Steff Yotka because everything in my wardrobe at the time was either tropical or a swimsuit. I think my smartest item when Nicole and Steff asked to do a Zoom was a super colorful sweater vest from Ganni. Honestly, I might as well be wearing denim shorts. Lucky for me, I found the job Fashion— but the sweater vest went to The RealReal immediately and sold out within days of going live!
