The cat gifted by Russian President Putin to the Akita Prefecture governor died of illness at the age of 12

December 4, 2024

Tokyo – Mir, a male cat gifted by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Akita Prefecture Governor Norihisa Satake, died on Tuesday. It was 12 o'clock.

Mir is a Russian word meaning “peace”.

In February 2013, the governor presented Putin with an Akita named Yume to express his gratitude for Russia's support for reconstruction after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, and the Siberian cat was given to Satake.

Satake is a cat lover who raises and cares for Mir along with the other cats in his family. Mir's age is equivalent to about 64 years old in humans, and he has been plagued by illness.

Yume has not been seen in public since December 2016.
