The Best Final Dancouga To Date

It’s taken a while, but the Gattai Black Wing is finally here, and it might be the best-designed version yet.

In terms of context, Black Wings is an interesting addition to the original Dankuga Japanese cartoons. It’s piloted by Alan Igor, who often rescues Dankuga when he gets into trouble, then calms down in suitably mysterious fashion after completing his mission.

The way the anime is set up, you’re supposed to think Blackwing will be a late-series combo that gives Dancouga the ability to fly.

Then, in typical bait-and-switch fashion, Eren and his Blackwings sacrificed themselves against a powerful foe, leaving fans wondering what would happen to Dankuga and its inability to fly.

The answer is the booster suit used at the end of the animated series and featured in the OVA “Final Episode”, Requiem for Victims.

However, it still left fans scratching their heads. What would happen if Blackwing combined with Dankuga? What would that look like?

where is this super robot war Coming in and resulting in the aptly named Final Dankuga, Blackwing and Dankuga combine to form a fantastic combination of truly superior firepower.

My first contact with Final Dancouga was in Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 On the PlayStation 2, I was surprised at how utterly destructive it was compared to other units when fully combined.

result super robot war We have owned quite a few Final Dancouga toys over the years and this reflects the excellent quality. I’ve reviewed a few, and I personally like Sentinel’s various Metamorforce versions and Bandai Spirits’ epic Souls of Chogokin version.

Well, Good Smile Company has now launched their own Black Wing, and it might be the best one yet.

Now, I say this as a hypergold supremacist and lover of all things diecast, but this Gattai Black Wing figure is extremely well done.

While there’s no die-cast to speak of, the articulation and playability are excellent. All joints have nice ratcheting and clicking. So you can do all the postures you can think of with this one, and do it easily.

You also get some extra elements from an unreleased version of the design, such as a new spear, chest emblem, and a new head with a mouth.

All of these are optional extras, and Blackwing’s base character is very accurate to the original animated version.

Blackwing’s flight mode transitions are also well thought out, especially the arm transitions, which are probably the best I’ve ever seen. It all comes together perfectly and looks great.

The additional detailing of the gold filigree on the head and “beak” in flight mode is also excellent, and the overall sculpt and detailing is impressive throughout.

Once combined with the Gattai Hagane Works Dancouga (sold separately), everything becomes truly majestic. The whole scene is obviously huge, but it’s easily the best depiction of Final Dancouga to date, and that’s by quite a margin.

Even though the Blackwing isn’t die-cast and is fairly light, it’s still heavy enough to tip the Dancouga backwards. However, if you set up the joints correctly, the whole thing stands up well on its own, which is actually pretty impressive.

Overall, I can’t fault what Good Smile Company has accomplished. It may have taken literal decades, but it’s the best version of Final Dancouga we’ve ever had, and highly recommended for fans of anime and mecha toys.

The Gattai Black Wing costs 30,000 yen (approximately $188 at current exchange rates) and can be purchased from Good Smile Company or other online retailers.
