According to Rewilding Europe, a European project co-founded by WWF Netherlands, ARK Nature, Wild Wonders of Europe and Conservation Capital, the number of wildlife in Europe has increased by about 40% in the past 15 years. This is due to several factors: wildlife protection laws (particularly those protecting wolves), rural depopulation, and improved agricultural practices.

The province of Grosseto was and still is a predominantly agricultural region, with a rising average age in its small villages and the few existing industries that have closed due to the economic crisis. It also contains residential areas classified as “nature reserves”, a huge hunting reserve, and much woodland that has been restored to forest due to the gradual abandonment of the countryside.
