On the Podcast: Vogue Editors Answer Your Summer Dressing Questions with Liana Satenstein

No matter where you are in the world, dressing for summer is never easy. In this Tuesday’s special penetrateNicole and Chioma are joined by staff writers and ex Fashion Staff member Liana Satenstein, who helms the Addressed column, answers all of your most pressing summer wardrobe questions.

“I like the more playful side of writing about what to wear and what not to wear,” Liana told the host, referring to a column about whether bras are mandatory in the workplace. Short answer: It depends. But the panel agreed that over-padded push-up bras (or “chicken-fried bras,” as Vogue Runway’s Sarah Mower calls them) are generally not suitable.

Then they turned to the very thorny issue of summer shoes. Mathieu Blazy debuted the controversial anti-shoe silhouette at Chanel’s Resort 2027 show, and the group had plenty of ideas. “Fingerbone fodder for years!” is Leanna’s assessment. “I have to choose my words carefully, but that’s a deliciously crazy half-sandal.” The conclusion is that Blazy’s shoes aren’t meant for dirty city streets, but may soon find a home on the red carpet or the beach. For most people looking to show off their toes in New York this summer, Birkenstocks and mid-heels are the more practical options.

What follows is a perennial dilemma: what to do with a loved one’s unwanted old clothes (“an albatross around my neck”) and how to clean and maintain a closet with limited space. Leanna’s advice is to give yourself a time limit. “Sixty seconds. Find an item of clothing that you don’t wear – I’m sure you can do it. Do this once a day for seven days, and by the end of the week you’ll have seven items of clothing that you can throw away.”

Other summer dressing conundrums they tackle include how to put together office-appropriate outfits in the heat of summer, what’s on your summer shopping wish list, and modern rules for wedding attire. If you want to know more nuance than “don’t wear white,” give it a listen.
