Every year, the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival hosts an array of stunning gowns and epic, one-of-a-kind couture outfits that seem to have been plucked from heaven. In a male-dominated world, this is one of the few events that revolves primarily around the heroine. Men in stylish black tuxedos are just a backdrop for cute ladies in fancy outfits (sorry to bother you, guys).
That being said, this year’s Cannes Men’s event wasn’t exactly a snoozefest—in fact, quite the opposite, which surprised and delighted us. This past week has been a lot of unexpected fun with photo shoots and red carpets in France and – dare we say it? —The adventurous men’s styling options are not to be missed and almost rival their female counterparts. Think: killer suits, a few cheeky slogan T-shirts (see: Jordan Forstmann’s “I was booed at Cannes and all I got was this shitty shirt”), and some very low-button shirts that reveal a bit seriously Chiseled boxes (ahem, Alton Mason, ahem).
Hollywood gentlemen seem to have realized that, yes, they too can make a statement on this year’s Cannes carpet. Of course, historically the festival has been a very formal and conservative event – with a strict dress code! — but in recent years, the steps and repetitions have been relaxed, allowing participants to bring more flair and personality to the mix. That was certainly the case for the men this week: they all combined classic tailoring with unexpected finishes, and the result was that their outfits felt just right fresh and relevant.
Take actor Miles Teller, for example, who participated in his paper tiger Photographed wearing a fresh Zegna knitted polo shirt and pants set. That pea soup shade? Unlikely——and Very chic. For Diego Calva club boy For the photoshoot, the Mexican actor chose a charcoal shirt from Isabel Marant, which she tucked into pleated trousers, creating the perfect combination of casual yet elegant. These aren’t your standard (i.e. boring) suits: a clear and successful attempt at shaking things up and modernizing the silhouette.
