Brightening, Concealing, and Hydrating—Tinted Eye Creams Do It All

We all know to keep a good eye cream in our daily routine—if there’s something that can help eliminate eye bags or brighten dark circles, we’re all for it. But what if there was a way to treat these skin issues while also acting as a concealer? This tinted eye cream is a clever case of having the best of both worlds.

This shift away from traditional eye products reflects everyone’s need and love for products that can do more than one thing at once. Ron Robinson, cosmetic chemist and founder of BeautyStat, agrees: “Consumers are looking for hybrid products that offer color and skin care benefits.” Tinted eye creams are basically skin care products for the eyes that also contain some kind of color or pigment, Robinson explains. According to Jane Yoo, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon in New York City, this tint can often immediately improve dark under-eye areas and mask obvious problems (such as hyperpigmentation, dull skin tone, etc.), while the active skin care ingredients can treat these problems long-term.

“So an eye cream can help hydrate, de-puff, smooth and brighten, while an eye cream can help neutralize dark circles, brighten shadows and make the eye area appear more relaxed and calm,” says Dr. Yoo. “This duality can improve compliance because consumers can see the visible results of the product in the mirror immediately after use.”

She goes on to say that the best tinted eye creams contain ingredients known to brighten, hydrate, and smooth, such as caffeine, niacinamide, peptides, ceramides, and retinol. She also recommends looking for anti-inflammatory ingredients, like tranexamic acid, to help combat hyperpigmentation, and notes that many tinted eye creams come with SPF to provide sun protection for the eye area where it’s needed. Also, look out for formulas that contain iron oxide or mineral pigments, which, as Dr. Yoo says, can give you instant color correction and brightening effects.

Using one is simple. In general, Robinson says, skin should be cleansed before applying moisturizer. Dr. Yoo agrees, saying that tinted eye creams can be considered the last step in eye skin care. If it happens to have SPF, she says, you can use it after your moisturizer so it doesn’t dilute the SPF in it.
