Classic PlayStation Shmup ‘Geppy-X’ To Get HD Update This July

Favorite PlayStation mecha shooters Gaby-X An HD version will be released later this year, which will ultimately make the game more widely available.

Released for the original PlayStation back in 1999, Gaby-X is a tongue-in-cheek love letter to 1970s Super Robot animation.

Songs by famous anime theme song artists, and mecha designs that look straight out of Go Nagai’s manga, Gaby-X is a very knowing satire on the super robot genre.

Since the PlayStation was nearing the end of its life, it was largely ignored in Japan and didn’t achieve much success, which is why there aren’t many copies out there now, and the few that do tend to be very expensive.

That’s the point, really. Gaby-X Not the greatest shmups out there, but it does “get” what it’s modeled after, and its rarity causes the game’s price to rise on the collector’s market.

That’s obviously where this new HD version comes in, but there are some caveats.

This is really just an emulation port for the most part; the core game hasn’t really been updated yet. To be honest, that’s a good thing. Problem with Gaby-X It’s its rarity that makes it better to re-release it as-is on modern consoles.

Another thing to mention is that the original game used a lot of anime cutscenes. Now, a new trailer for the HD version (shown below) claims that the footage has been rescanned from the original master.

The “original master” is the tape on which the animation was recorded, not the thousands of rescanned cells. The footage looks good, but this isn’t a remake of the movie as the original game probably didn’t use it.

Those minor issues aside, I’m really happy to see Gaby-X After all these years, it has finally seen its day when it has become more widely used. Because that could ruin any scalper’s day, but that’s always a good thing.

Personally, I’ve never been Gaby-Xbut it does have its charm, and its rarity often bothers me.

Gaby-X It will be released on July 16th via Steam for Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
