Islamabad – say geographical newsTalal said the former prime minister, who was lodged in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, was sent to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) in Islamabad on the evening of January 24 for a “20-minute” medical procedure.
“He was examined by ophthalmologists at Adiala jail, after which they recommended that it was necessary to take him to Pims for a minor medical procedure. On Saturday night, on the advice of these ophthalmologists and experts, he was brought to Pims,” Talal said.
He added that at Pims, Imran’s “eyes were further examined and, with his written approval, a 20-minute medical procedure was performed”. The former prime minister was then taken back to Adiala jail and given “important instructions”.
“During the medical process, his vital signs and everything were stable. He is absolutely healthy,” Talal said.
The minister claimed that “all prisoners” have access to doctors and medical care when such issues arise. “This is based on [jail] Rules, he’s absolutely fit,” he added.
Asked about concerns over Imran’s health, Talal reiterated that the PTI founder was “absolutely fine”.
The minister stressed that the opinion of medical experts is that Imran should be brought to Pims to undergo medical procedures. “He was very good and he was very good during this medical procedure.”
On Tuesday, the Press Trust of India said it had learned through reliable reports that Imran had been diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in his right eye, “leading to dangerous blockage of retinal veins”.
The party quoted medical experts as saying that if not treated promptly and properly, CRVO may cause permanent damage to his vision.
Also on Tuesday, PTI MNAs filed a fresh petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking permission to meet Imran.
According to a senior doctor at Pims Hospital, Imran bring The trip to the hospital for the surgery took quite some time on Saturday night amid tight security.
“Whatever procedures took place were completed when the morning time arrived, so we can say he was brought back on Sunday,” he claimed.
Doctors said there was “unusual activity” on Saturday night and the operating theater and anesthesia room were cordoned off ahead of Imran’s arrival in Pimms.
PTI condemns Imran’s ‘secret transfer’
Reacting to the minister’s statement, the Press Trust of India said it strongly condemned the “secret transfer” of Imran to Pim, deliberately keeping his family and party leadership informed, and refusing to meet his personal doctor.
The party declared it “clearly malicious, malicious and seriously unconstitutional and illegal behavior”.
According to Tarar, the PTI founder has requested treatment.
“If this is indeed the case, then why was such a request concealed from his family, party leadership and legal counsel? Therefore, PTI demands that this alleged request be made public immediately and filed with his family and lawyers,” it said.
“Secret operations, suppression of information and restrictions on meetings are unacceptable under any circumstances. PTI demands that a meeting with Imran Khan be immediately arranged and that his personal doctor be granted full and unconditional access,” the statement added.
“The treatment meted out to the former democratically elected prime minister and the country’s most popular national leader is a flagrant violation of the constitution, the law, democratic norms and fundamental human rights. The Punjab government and prison administration are pushing the country into a dangerous and destabilizing crisis by deliberately ignoring court orders,” the report said.
The party warned that if the federal government, the Punjab government and the Adiala jail authorities failed to immediately allow a meeting with Imran and access to his personal doctor, “full responsibility for the consequences will lie with them”.
“The public’s patience is being severely tested and public reaction to this unconstitutional, illegal and inhumane act is becoming inevitable,” the statement said, adding that Imran’s constitutional rights and human rights will continue to be protected.
It also wrote an open letter to human rights groups over the violation of Imran’s rights, saying: “The deliberate keeping of the detainees’ health status and location secret constitutes malice and bad faith and is a clear violation of international detention standards, including the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners.”
It urges human rights groups to pay attention to Imran’s situation; demands unrestricted visits by his family, lawyers and personal doctors; calls for an end to solitary confinement and custodial abuse; and urges Pakistani authorities to ensure fair, transparent and timely judicial proceedings.
Separately, the opposition alliance Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) called Imran’s transfer to the hospital without the knowledge of his family and personal doctors a “criminal negligence”.
It demanded that details of Imran’s condition be immediately disclosed to his family and said any “delay or irresponsibility” in this regard “will not be tolerated”.
Denying him access to a private doctor was a “violation of court orders,” the statement said. It added that the silence of state institutions on Imran’s health was “shocking”.
Former Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub said: “The fascist regime has refused to provide medical care to Prime Minister Imran Khan in Adiala. This violates all human rights norms. The judiciary is unable and unwilling to enforce its writ.”
He said Imran’s personal doctor, family and lawyers should have immediate access to him.
Imran’s sister demands release of his medical reports
Before Talal’s confirmation, Imran’s sister Noreen Niazi had expressed concerns over why the PTI founder’s family and lawyers were not informed whether his medical reports were true. She also requested that his medical reports be released.
“I am a sister and my question today is for the corridors of power,” Niazi said on X this morning.
“According to multiple journalists and media sources, our brother Imran Khan was taken to Pims Hospital during the night on the pretext of eye treatment. He was held there for three hours and then transferred back to Adiala Jail in an atmosphere of extreme mystery and eerie silence,” she said.
Niazi believed that if the reports were true, it would be a “blatant crime” and asked: “Why didn’t anyone have the courage to tell the truth to Imran Khan’s family and lawyers? From whom was this hidden and under whose orders?”
“How is our brother being treated in prison, and why are our families and attorneys being kept in the dark?”
Niazi reiterated his demand that Imran’s family, personal doctors and lawyers be allowed to see him, adding that “his complete medical reports should be made public”.
“This is no longer a request, this is a final warning!” she said.
Imran’s sister claimed that Imran was “not just another prisoner” and that “endangering his health is tantamount to trying to hoodwink the entire country.”
“Keep in mind that even if Imran Khan’s eyes suffer the slightest injury, this injustice will not be buried. After that, no one’s eyes will be safe,” Niazi added.
Separately, Imran’s son Qasim Khan claimed that “the authorities continue to block his treatment and deny him access to doctors he trusts.”
“I was deprived of even the right to talk to him. This is not governance. This is authoritarian cruelty,” he said on X.
Claiming that his father has now spent more than 900 days on a “death cell” without family visits or access to his personal doctor, Qasim stressed that CRVO “can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated with urgent medical intervention in an appropriate hospital”.
The son called on human rights defenders to “act before it’s too late”.
“The world must see that in Pakistan today, democracy is hollow and basic human rights are being violated,” he added.
