Singapore minister to send letter of demand to Bloomberg and other media over 'defamatory' comments

by The Tamesis

December 17, 2024

Singapore – Law and Home Affairs Minister Shanmugam Shanmugam and Manpower Minister Tan Siring are taking legal action against Bloomberg and other media outlets for making remarks about their real estate deals that they consider defamatory.

The statements were first published in a Bloomberg article on prime bungalow deals in Singapore on December 12, titled “Singapore's Luxury Home Deals Are Increasingly Secret.” Subsequently, media such as “The Online Citizen” and “The Edge” reprinted the news.

In a Facebook post on December 16, ministers said Bloomberg's article was defamatory and that they would issue a demand letter related to the article after taking legal advice.

The posts also said ministers would take similar action against others who made defamatory statements about the deals.

“We take these allegations seriously,” the ministers added.

In an interview with the Straits Times, a spokesman for Bloomberg said that it would not comment on the matter at this time.

This article is about quality bungalow deals (measured by value) signed from January to early December.

The findings come from data compiled by Bloomberg News and List Sotheby's International Realty.

The article mentioned property transactions involving two ministers.
