For a moment, a candlelit, book-lined bar in the East Village felt more like someone’s gothic living room than a Met Gala afterparty—until Miranda Kerr walked in, resplendent in a Wiederhoeft dress. The supermodel, who is flanked by husband, Snap co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel, is preparing to kick off Monsieur with Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin.

Just after midnight, Australian film director Baz Luhrmann hosted his annual party for the late-night set. True to his maximalist spirit, the venue was a perfect continuation of the evening’s theme of “fashion is art.” As the funk music grew louder, the grilled cheese began to flow, and guests poured into the velvety booths with espresso martinis in hand as the night deepened.

Guests include Hunter Schafer, Gracie Abrams, Sombr, Odessa A’Zion, Maude Apatow and Rami Malek. They trade their gowns for elaborate headdresses, feathers and fur jackets; the scene resembles the costume-led storytelling found in Luhrmann and Martin’s catalogs –Elvis Presley, Romeo and Juliet, even upcoming Joan of Arc.

Vespers martinis and superstar-themed cocktails are the drinks of choice, and the room is buzzing by 1:30 a.m. The party also previewed the debut of Specs, Snap’s foray into consumer smart glasses. Luhrmann himself wore tinted sunglasses and the same Prada red carpet look, with Martin at his side, past the paparazzi flashes and straight to Kerr’s booth.

DJ Daisy O’Dell kept things moving throughout the four-hour set, while Lykki Li and Frankie Valli kept the dance floor buzzing with energy. She wore a silver sculpted corset that reflected the Kardashian-Jenner vibe earlier in the evening: The nude bodice evoked classical sculpture and Renaissance portraiture.

It wasn’t long before smoke machines and real cigarette smoke came into play and Luhrmann became a magnet on the dance floor. At the edge of the mist, attendees compared camera film from the night, while Jack Harlow, wearing a tuxedo, silver brooch, and his signature baggy hat, surveyed the scene around him.

As the carnival enters the early morning, I can’t take my eyes off you Hit the speaker. As the music pulls the room into one final group dance, it feels like the final push to the celebration of the first Monday in May. “Love and friendship,” Luhrmann shouted over the beat. “Love and friendship!”
