There’s a lot for attendees to look forward to on the first Monday in May: the opening of the Costume Institute exhibit, high-profile celebrity exits from the Mark and Carlyle hotels, and of course, red carpet moments on the museum’s iconic staircase. Then, there are the after-parties, including the Standard High Line’s traditional Boom Party.
A$AP Rocky, Misty Copeland, Janelle Monáe, Adam Lambert, Wes Gordon, Coco Rocha and Ella Emhoff, among others, flocked to join this year’s hosts Gabriela Hearst, Grace Gummer and Yola Mezcal. Guests exiting the elevator from the top floor are greeted by flashing lights, then walk through a dimly lit lobby and through a heavy oak door. On the other hand: the gleaming Art Deco interiors make Boom one of New York’s most famous spaces, with unparalleled views of downtown Manhattan. Mood lighting, a sunken bar serving mezcalitas and mezcal martinis, and a buzzing playlist create a night to remember.

The party kicked into high gear at 1 a.m. as guests arrived wearing sexier, shorter alternatives to those they wore on the carpet, the daytime glamor adjusting after dark. Gumer swapped the metallic gold Gabriella Hearst gown she wore on the carpet — which Hearst admitted was “very nice” — for a brown hooded suede gown by the designer. As the mescalitas finished their work and the room reached its peak, Kelela made a surprise appearance on top of the sunken bar, performing LMK and happy ending The crowd sang along (with Monet taking the front seat and singing the loudest).
The show keeps the energy going well into the early hours, as guests return to the cobblestone streets of the Meatpacking District and perhaps head to the next stop in the multi-party feast taking place across the city.
