The Princess of Wales has one of the most dissected wardrobes in the world, but she doesn’t tend to take inspiration from the catwalk or pay close attention to street-style outfits. Her unique stance – Kate must consider diplomacy, practicality, propriety and photography when dressing for a royal engagement – often means sticking to what she knows rather than following trends. For example, don’t expect to see the princess wearing a crazy dress or ugly shoes. (She suddenly ditched heels not long ago.)
As a result, we’re used to seeing Kate in slim-cut, fit-and-flare dresses and Alexander McQueen coats, often paired with suede Gianvito Rossi pumps and a sparkly blowout. But a royal outing this week by Kate and William (the same week they celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary) revealed that a favorite street style favorite also gets a royal seal of approval: a blue and brown combo.
As elegant as black, but a more interesting option is chocolate brown, which was everywhere last season, with Michael Kors, Victoria Beckham and Saint Laurent all leaning into the decadent hue, and fashion fans are duly curating all-brown looks for fall and winter. Now that summer is just around the corner, editors are breathing freshness into looks with a pop of light blue.
While visiting the IntoUniversity Charity with Prince William this week, Kate layered her spring light blue blazer over a simple chocolate brown T-shirt, creating an effect that was perfect with black and white but a little less predictable – totally perfect for the sunny weather. She added another street style must-have: statement jewelry. A three-letter pendant hangs from her necklace – the initials of her three children, George, Charlotte and Louis.
