There’s a hierarchy when it comes to celebrity sightings – and the elusive Olsen twins are at the top.
There are entry-level bad guys on Instagram, stars you might see front row at fashion week, and a former cast member and current creative director of The Row. Beloved for their tousled rich-girl style, their tousled hair and wine-stained Le City bags have made Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen a cult figure for anyone who pays close attention to celebrity outfits.
The Olsen twins were photographed taking the concept of “twins” to new heights in an (even more rare) joint sighting in New York on Thursday. Both carried crocodile-print Margaux bags, and each wore swaddle coats and signature, casually draped scarves. (It’s spring, folks.) While the likes of Zoë Kravitz and Jennifer Lawrence are featured on billboards for Olsens’ brand The Row, it’s important to remember who actually Invented the “tired cool girl wearing expensive-looking basics” approach.

The former child stars often wear complementary styles when they’re seen together — and Monday’s upcoming Met Gala was the backdrop for some of those moments: They wore vintage leather courtesy of Chanel in 2019, matching bohemian lace in 2017, and the same but different black and gold ensembles in 2016.
What does daily Olsen Outfit™ consist of? It’s all about the accessories. Like said drapes and giant scarves, wraparound black tones and understated sneakers in every iteration of fringe and paisley. (Who says Sambas are dead? Not Mary-Kate.) And, of course, there’s The Row’s handbag hall of fame: There’s the cult-favorite Margaux bag, of course, but the Olsens have also launched heavyweights like the India and the casual and practical Park tote.
