In “Mother Mary,” the Pop Star-Worthy Costumes Tell a Deeper Story

Director David Lowery (peter pan and wendy, green knight) recruited Bina Daigeler, who worked on tar and 2020 Mulan, Supervised the film’s costumes. Taking on the project – which is also a true fashion spectacle – was more than just dressing Hathaway in sequins and Taylor Swift-esque leotards: Daigler’s production on screen was a complicated journey. When we first meet Mary the Virgin in the film, her star has faded and Daigle must deliver fashion-forward looks that convey the tension of losing fame. “For me, the key is to find ways to express emotion and translate it into clothing,” she said.

In a flashback scene, we see the Virgin Mary in the prime of her youth—draped in a flowing cape, a crystal-encrusted bodice, and a halo-shaped tiara, her signature accessory. (A not-so-subtle homage to a sacred figure in Christianity.) The costume designers were inspired by real-life singers. “I loved Beyoncé when she was on the Renaissance Tour; we were also looking at Taylor Swift and Dua Lipa. But I also always look back: We were drawn to old pop music, especially Madonna from the ’80s.”
