Things are getting trickier when it comes to skin tone. As cosmetics become more focused on skin-care benefits, the lines between the best tinted sunscreens and other skin-evening heroes are becoming even blurr. Many of our favorite foundations, tinted moisturizers, and more now have some added level of sun protection as an added bonus. In narrowing down this list, FashionBeauty Shopping Editor Kiana Murden and I had an interesting debate: What exactly is tinted sunscreen?
“A tinted sunscreen is a product that primarily functions as SPF, with added pigments to provide light to medium coverage,” explains esthetician and Wildling co-founder Britta Plug. “This is especially useful for mineral sunscreens that may leave a white cast. These pigments help coordinate the physical sunscreen with your individual skin tone.”

She went on to explain that the difference between tinted sunscreen and tinted moisturizer with SPF is actually semantic—think of it as a spectrum, rather than separate categories. In her opinion, it really depends on the main function of the product. “Is it formulated primarily to moisturize and hydrate the skin, but also has SPF as an added benefit? Or is it primarily an SPF with some added moisturizing ingredients to achieve a dewy look or offset some of the dryness that comes with mineral SPF?” Ultimately, we agree that the primary purpose of a tinted sunscreen is to provide UV protection first, and subtle skin tone coverage second.
As professional esthetician Amy Wall says, “Tinted sunscreens won’t give you glamor, but they will give you healthy coverage and peace of mind.” It’s a solution for everyday wear and skin-enhancing makeup. As winter winds down and temperatures rise, I try to keep the layers of products to a minimum, just like I do with my wardrobe. Of course, tinted sunscreen may not completely cover your skin, but with targeted use of concealer, you can keep your skin looking glowing and flawless.
