Lena Dunham returns to the Met Gala red carpet for her first appearance since 2019.
In her new memoir, reputation diseaseDunham recounted her previous experience attending the Met Gala. In 2017, she suffered complications from endometriosis surgery at night and was hospitalized; the following year, Dunham attended the gala while recovering. In the book, she recalls taking her gold Elizabeth Kennedy gown back to the treatment center, where it was searched for contraband. Later, one of her patients, a teenager she called Galen, tried on the dress and walked around the living room.
Now, eight years later, Dunham is returning to the 2026 Met Gala in her own way as a member of the host committee. Still, as someone with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Dunham recognizes her body’s limitations. “Someone asked me in another interview, ‘Why do you go if you don’t like it?’ I never said I didn’t like it. But I think any honest person — even Anna or someone with authority there — would say it’s a rodeo,” she said. “As a fan, I’ve always loved going to the games and I’ve always loved being here.”
Dunham writes about her experience with chronic pain Fashion— including her decision to have a hysterectomy at age 31. “Anna knew a lot of what I was going through physically because I shared it in the magazine,” she said. “This year has been kind of a vote of confidence. I feel like they’re saying, ‘We see you’re feeling better. You’re in your body. You can do this.'” It’s an honor to be invited, and I hope to rise to the occasion whenever possible. “
And like she did in Valentino designed by Alessandro Michele. “I wrote him a long and detailed fan letter about how much his work meant to me,” Dunham said. “I was lucky that he responded and said he was ready to get the job done.”
