If Jennifer Lopez is going to do one thing on the red carpet, give us one robe. (Or, to quote our late Aretha Franklin: “A great dress, a beautiful dress.”)
Last night, the star held the premiere of her new romantic comedy movie office romance In Los Angeles, co-starring Brett Goldstein and Amy Sedaris, she opted for a striking vintage number, strolling down the steps to repeat. Rather than launching a new custom piece, J.Lo chose a classic Atelier Versace dress from the brand’s Spring 2004 Haute Couture collection. Intricate laser cuts, crystal embellishments and maxi dresses? Today’s premiere feels equally fitting for 2026.
Of course, Lopez is a long-time Versace wearer—Helloher 2000 Grammy dress! — so it’s no surprise that she and her stylists, Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn, have unrestricted access to the Italian brand’s archives. Still, given that the brand is currently in between head designers, reviving this retro dress is an interesting choice. (Donatella Versace is now an “ambassador” for the brand, while its previous chief creative officer, Dario Vitale, left in December.) new new Judging from Versace’s experience, it makes sense for A-listers to dig into their past. J.Lo isn’t the only one like this.
Stars like Miley Cyrus, Blake Lively and Anne Hathaway have all been recreating vintage Versace pieces on the red carpet this year, suggesting that Versace is set to be a growing trend for the summer. Most recently, Cyrus received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this month, wearing a strappy, bondage-style gown from Atelier Versace’s Fall 2015 collection. Although the exhibition was only a decade ago, finding such a specific work from the 2010s was clearly intentional. She makes the vampire design look OK. (Siri: Cue Cyrus’ “Walk of Fame.”)
