I’ve never cared about football, but after a week in Italy – World Cup excitement is at fever pitch just weeks before it officially starts on June 11 – I have to admit, watching a game in a crowded bar with a glass of chilled wine in hand sounds… pretty good?
This revelation made me look back at past World Cups…or, more specifically, the history of World Cup songs, which, whether we like it or not, are always engraved in our minds in one way or another. But which ones truly deserve to represent one of the most watched sporting events in the world, and which ones leave something (or more) to be desired? Here’s a look at the power rankings of every World Cup song since the tradition began in 1990.
10. Anastasia, “Prosperity”, 2002
Some This song has to be last, for me it’s “Boom”. Yes, it’s heavy on early nostalgia, but in a bad way—that is, it reminds me more of pop culture policing of young female stars and the original threat of skinny jeans than of anything actually. OK Circa 2002.
