WHO: Micah James-Williams, Stylist
Store secret: My best kept secret is splitting my wardrobe! I live between Jamaica and New York, the weather is very different, and I have a winter wardrobe and a master/summer wardrobe. It keeps my clothes organized and allows me to review, clean, and repair any items in my other closets that are out of season.
MVP project: Over time I have become a person who only uses wooden hangers. I love the way they hold up the garment; the wooden base hangers are perfect too. (Having each item of clothing folded on a hanger at the top of the closet makes it difficult to see and find where they came from.) I’m also a big fan of closet fresheners; These scents from PFR are perfect and have the most calming, natural scent. I also use these Damprids to help prevent any unwanted moisture and mold in my closets.
Rotation schedule: Every year I do a deep clean. I used to do an annual sale in New York for my fashion community, but now that I live on an island, I use resale platforms like The Real Real and Poshmark or utilize my Instagram stories for direct sales. My rules for keeping stuff have changed: now I keep a lot more stuff and really prioritize my archives to pass on to my nieces or future daughters. My rules focus on value (cost per wear), importance of the brand to future value, and condition of the item. I’ve learned to keep some pieces even if they feel dated now because I’ve thrown out pieces in the past and regretted it.
little things: I also have a closet with accessories. I installed shelves in a small closet in my bedroom to store my jewelry and sunglass trays, tote bags, a bucket of bathing suits, t-shirts, and all the little things in between. From a stylist’s perspective, you can never go wrong with a beautiful jewelry tray and clearly visible case. I organize them by type, which helps me keep items in place and prevent tarnishing or damage.
Wardrobe favorites: Satin and silk button-downs from Bode, Wales Bonner and Dries Van Noten; vintage graphic tees that I pair with denim skirts; classic high-waisted jeans and shorts from brands like Moussy; sweaters from Gap and Banana Republic. My everyday wardrobe focuses on simple, lightweight clothes that are appropriate for my tropical terrain.
