Lumina Spa at Namia River Retreat

What should you try?

Your time at Lumina will begin with an assessment to determine where you fall on the yin and yang spectrum, with adjustments to the former requiring a focus on relaxation and the latter centered around physical well-being. This determines not only which herbs are most beneficial but also, to some extent, your treatment, although adjustments are welcome. I am yang-biased, so my doctor prescribed a mixture of mugwort, Vietnamese ginseng, and perilla leaves to help with blood circulation, metabolic balance, and inflammation respectively. These three ingredients were then incorporated into my hammam prior to my treatment, which included Vietnamese massage, herbal ointment treatments, and cupping.

Frankly, I would sign up for all three again. Vietnamese massage uses traditional kneading techniques to release knots while using moxa sticks to promote healing and circulation. Over the last few years I’ve developed a preference for plasters, finding that a combination of heat, herbs and pressure can relieve my heavy shoulders, so it’s no surprise that a more targeted approach and personalized blends are proving to be highly effective. I also tried cupping – mostly out of curiosity. The suction cups were uncomfortable at times, but my back felt noticeably looser afterwards. However, it did leave what looked like bruises – my friend’s daughter screamed “Alien!” and ran away when she saw my back – so for those planning on taking photos of frolicking in the pool, this might not be the best option.
