Most voters unhappy with Thai election commission’s performance, suspect election fraud

Bangkok – A majority of voters surveyed were dissatisfied with the Electoral Commission’s (EC) handling of the February 8 general election, with many expressing concerns about electoral fraud and a lack of transparency.

The survey was conducted nationwide from February 17 to 20 by Suan Dusit University’s Suan Dusit Poll among 1,231 respondents.

The survey found that 59.77% of respondents were dissatisfied with the performance of the Election Commission, and 67.99% expressed concerns about electoral fraud and lack of transparency.

The survey covers three areas:

  • Lack of transparency and electoral fraud – 67.99%
  • Polling station procedures are complex or confusing – 40.45%
  • The party’s policies may not be realistically realized – 40.37%
  • Political conflict — 37.94%
  • Political attacks and smear campaigns – 35.09%

Public satisfaction with the Electoral Commission’s performance in the most recent election

  • Somewhat dissatisfied——33.68%
  • Quite satisfied – 32.91%
  • Not satisfied——26.09%
  • Very satisfied – 7.32%

Do people think this election will improve Thai politics overall?

  • No change (about the same) – 49.31%
  • Worse — 31.52%
  • Better — 19.17%
