The Chanel Cultural Foundation has announced the winners of the Chanel Next Prize in 2026, awarding €100,000 each to ten artists working in the fields of visual arts, performance, design, music and film.
Chanel said on its website that the fashion house’s Culture Fund is a global program of initiatives and partners that “seeks to advocate for the equality of voices and provide visibility to global game-changers at a time when art provides an important source of inspiration and changes the way we see the world.”
The biennial awards, announced in London on January 19, are launching in 2021 and are now in their third edition. It recognizes contemporary practitioners who are recognized as reshaping their fields and influencing the future of culture.
This year’s artists include artists from ten different countries: visual artist Álvaro Urbano; jazz musician Ambrose Akinmusire; fashion designer Andrea Pena; artist and filmmaker Ayoung Kim; designer Barbara Sanchez-Kane; sound artist Emeka Ogboh; choreographer Marco da Silva Ferreira; experimental musician Pan Daijing; filmmaker Payal Kapadia; and painter Pol Taburet.
In addition to unrestricted funding, each winner will participate in a two-year mentoring and professional development program organized in collaboration with Chanel’s cultural partners, including London’s Royal College of Art. Chanel said the scheme is designed to provide artists with long-term support rather than project-based commissions, allowing them to pursue ambitious works on their own terms.
“The next Chanel Grand Prix creates the conditions for artists to develop on their own terms,” Yana Peel, president of arts, culture and heritage at Chanel, said in a statement. “Each winner is a trailblazer, shaping the present and defining the future with creativity and audacity.”
Winners of the Chanel Next Prize in 2024 include artists Tolia Astakhishvili, Ho Tzu Nyen and Dalton Paula.
Chanel said: “This next Grand Prix marks the latest chapter in Chanel’s century-old commitment to art – a legacy that began with Gabrielle Chanel’s support of avant-garde pioneers from Salvador Dali to Jean Cocteau.”
