An updated Mons has arrived. While designers Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim will officially return to the runway this fall, this resort collection is a clear indicator of where they want to take their brand next. “Laura and I are masculine and feminine in everything we do,” Garcia said. While those energies may have been more isolated when the duo balanced design duties at Monse and Oscar de la Renta, the aesthetic was more fully realized this season when they focused their attention under a single roof. In the most practical terms, Kim said that with this collection, she wanted a piece for every occasion.
They shamelessly deconstruct suits with classic feminine elegance and a hint of sexiness. The highlight of the collection is a completely sheer lace bustier dress paired with a more demure leopard print knit suit. Meanwhile, a red ombre fringed gown rocked alongside a bandeau top made entirely from dismembered denim waistbands, which the designer considered a quirky highlight of the collection.
For the pair, lightness is another central topic. The free-standing blazer collar—a bit like a modern-day “dickie”—emerges as a unique accessory to prevent bulk from appearing under a blazer or jumper; its knitted iteration is a more comfortable take on the same idea. Expressing airy ideas in a more traditional way, summery organza, like a lemon-print dress, adds a touch of sex appeal. It’s a wide range of pieces, but there’s something for any occasion – if not the one Kim would have liked – at least most occasions.
