In fact, this year’s ball was the most elaborate yet. Reilly not only served as host, but also entertained the crowd by singing a series of themed ditties (“I’m Your Puppet,” “Am I a Toy or a Treasure?”), accompanied by singer Sierra Ferrell and the seven-piece New Orleans jazz band The California Feet Warmers. Later in the night, producer, DJ and artist Kindness (whose collaborators include Robyn, Solange and Dev Hynes) kept things lively with a steady stream of club classics.
There’s good reason for the pomp and circumstance: More than two weeks ago, BBMT announced its “Stay in LA” campaign, which aims to raise $5 million to purchase the theater’s current building and another $2 million for needed renovations. Ahead of the ball, the event has found several donors, including Wallis Annenberg, the Chris and Melody Malachowsky Family Foundation, and longtime supporters actor Jack Black and his wife, folk artist Tanya Haden. By The Last Dance, Puppet Prom had reached its $100,000 goal, in addition to receiving generous matching donations. (As of this writing, the theater is continuing to raise funds through live auctions and cash donations.)

BBMT is an irreplaceable resource for the surrounding community. “I’ve been watching Bob Baker’s puppet shows since my kids were little,” Riley said. “It is one of the most original and creative theater companies Los Angeles has ever produced, inspiring the minds of generations young and old.”
“Many of our members are delighted with the work BBMT does, from going there as children to taking their grandchildren there today,” added Nicole Infante, president of the Garibaldina Society, which donates space for the Puppet Ball every year. “The discussion is not whether we should help, but how and if we pet the puppets!”
