Roy Ayers once sang, “Everybody loves the sun.” So SZA’s red carpet appearance — in a bright yellow dress in ocher, marigold, corn and golden linen by Bode — certainly sparked joy. After all, it’s a color associated with energy, sunshine, and happiness. “We worked with a vintage dealer who sourced us over a hundred yards of yellow fabric in a variety of materials including tulle, taffeta, silk faille and lace beading,” says Emily Adams Bode Aujla.
Combining SZA’s desire for an “imperial feel” with its artistic Met theme, the designers looked to the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Studio) as a source of inspiration, a highly influential pre-war design group focused on craftsmanship and natural themes. (Fun fact: Couturier Paul Poiret was inspired by Wiener Werkstätte to start his own art school.) Using the Metropolitan Museum of Art as a resource, Bode studied Vienna as well as 18th-century fashion plates. These make the two-tiered ruffled skirt and basque-shaped bodice look beautiful and voluminous.
