Vogue Staffers Go Toe-to-Toe Over Chanel’s Freaky New Shoes

Chanel fanatics may have just donned the hooded pumps from Matthieu Blazy’s debut Chanel collection, but the designer is already working on the next shoe to spark conversation — or maybe just the lack thereof?

Yesterday, Chanel presented its Resort 2027 collection in Biarritz, and among the mermaid-style sequined and logo swim caps, there was a particularly bizarre pair of shoes that set the internet abuzz: high heels strapped to the model’s feet, with no soles visible.

Fashion Like many members of the fashion community, staff were immediately intrigued by these semi-barefoot shoes. Where would people wear these? WHO Would you wear these? How did we arrive at this finger-bone-filled moment? Here, four Fashion The writers had a face-to-face chat, or rather an intimate chat, about Chanel’s foray into weird footwear.

Define yourself – are you a shoe addict or a skeptic?

Hannah Jackson: I’m a professional! While I admit I’m an entry-level shoe addict, I think they’re the easiest way to add appeal to any outfit. My current go-to is Tory Burch open toe monk shoes.

Anna Kafla: Self-proclaimed toe splitting expert. One of my favorite pairs of Margiela Tabi low-heeled ballet pumps is currently being held hostage by my cobbler, who is looking for the wooden shoe box splints needed to restore them. Tabi series is Very Much loved.

Max Berlinger: I love designing weird shoes for other people, but I prefer wearing Vans loafers. But I love seeing a really wild pair of shoes on the catwalk – I still remember the awe I felt when I first saw the McQueen Armadillos walking down the catwalk. I have a lot of respect for anyone who takes a big swing in a shoe.

Christian Allaire: Always enjoy an unbalanced pair of shoes. It’s a low-key way to instantly inject personality into your look. Why keep it basic when you can Bold.

What was your first reaction when this pair of shoes hit the Chanel show?

Hu Jie: Admittedly, I was more focused on the gill headpieces and swimming caps, but I was so happy when my eyes finally landed on the model’s feet. What a cheeky, fun idea. Blazy doesn’t want to convince anyone that any of this is practical, but sometimes whimsy is the point.

California: I always prefer a running shoe that doesn’t focus on comfort or practicality – we should enjoy fantasy here. The (mostly) bare feet on the sand carpet are reminiscent of frolicking on the beach, and that’s the vibe of the whole show.
