Just in time, the “bohemian chic” headlines are back: a trend that’s had a “resurgence” every summer since I’ve been working in fashion publishing. That’s thanks in large part to outfits shot at Coachella, a music festival set in the Colorado desert where temperatures soared above 90 degrees last weekend, which included fringed lace bra tops, low-rise bell bottoms and flower crowns: the staples of nearly every summer party since Woodstock first offered the blueprint for bohemian chic in 1969.
Margot Robbie is clearly out of touch with it all. The actor was photographed arriving by boat at Club 55 in Saint-Tropez yesterday afternoon, but not in his crochet dress and basket bag. La Jane Birkin in a bohemian plate, but – take a deep breath – a denim bucket hat, a V-neck sweater, baggy jeans and suede loafers, with a small Chanel shopping bag slung over one shoulder and a giant tote and oversized leather jacket on the other. She looked like she was attending an Oasis concert in the middle of winter. Perhaps it’s proof that there’s more than one way to dress for summer: You don’t have to succumb to trend cycles, and you don’t have to succumb to the climate.
Thank God. I don’t believe in dressing based on the weather forecast, only in having the inner perseverance to overcome it. I’m glad there’s evidence that Margot Robbie feels the same way. Let’s see if Coachella attendees this weekend will pay attention.
