when The queen wears prada The film was released in 2006, and stylist Micaela Erlanger remembers being immediately connected to the film. It was a case of life imitating art: At the time, Erlanger was interning at Condé Nast, which publishes magazines including Fashion. “This film really pulled back the curtain on the fashion world and revolutionized people’s understanding of the industry,” Erlanger said. “Now, working in this industry and working on the next film is a full circle!”
In fact, over the next few weeks, Erlanger will be styling one of her longtime clients, Meryl Streep, in support of her various red carpet appearances. The Devil Wears Prada 2which will be released on May 1. The press conference officially kicked off last night in Mexico City, ahead of premieres in London, New York and East Asia. Streep’s first tour look? A red suit from Dolce & Gabbana was accented with brooches from Streep’s personal collection (including two purple ribbons she wore when she received the National Medal of Arts from Barack Obama in 2010). She later changed into a floor-length, buttoned Schiaparelli gown. “This will be the most stylish thing you’ve ever seen her wear,” said Erlanger, who has worked with Streep for 11 years.
Streep paired her head-to-toe red look with a custom Olympia Le-Tan satchel, which featured the same red hay heel stilettos seen on the new movie poster. Erlanger added that styling the tour was “a fashion girl’s dream.” “Of all the movies, how could I not be excited to do this?” she mused. That said, the dizzying stakes aren’t lost on her: Erlanger knows the world will be dissecting Streep’s outfits throughout April. “It’s stressful,” she admitted with a laugh. “There is absolutely zero room for error.”
That’s why Erlanger adopted a strategy for this tour: create a look that’s both modern and chic, the difference between Meryl and Miranda’s styles. “We wanted to pay homage to the original film, but it’s also about evolution,” Erlanger said. “It’s not about dressing Miranda Priestly, it’s about dressing Meryl Streep as she is now, a strong and accomplished woman at the top of her career.”
