Zara is currently the protagonist in the fashion news circle. With the news of Willy Chavarria, who is famous at New York Fashion Week, constantly exposed, Zara has become Zara’s latest partner. John Galliano dug into the retailer’s archives to “re-create” the brand’s past in time for the September launch of Chavarria’s collection of clothing, jewelry and accessories for men and women on March 26.
“This collaboration is really a way for me to share the lofty aspects of the brand’s vision with a wider, more democratic audience,” said Chavarria Fashion Alliance’s. The collaboration is named “Vatísmo” in honor of the designer’s palpable spirit that he embodies in every endeavor. The highest form of “vato,” a colloquial term used in the Chicano community that “celebrates friendship, comradeship, and love; it speaks of personal bonds, pride of belonging to a community, and the power of roots.”
“It’s also a way for people to become more familiar with the vision of women that I have,” he continued. So far, this vision has been explored through crowd-pleasing fashion shows, the most recent of which was staged at a Paris dojo against the backdrop of a recreated New York intersection sprinkled with crosswalk stripes and furniture.
For Zara, there was another narrative: “I had fantasized about a mansion in Mexico City where a family with a lot of drama lived. I was watching American TV series from the 1980s, like dallas and dynasty “The mix of Mexican telenovelas I grew up with my grandmother on,” he says, “is very chic, dramatic, even to the point of humor.”
The Willy Chavarria woman is played by Christy Turlington in the campaign shot by Glen Luchford: “I hope we see her because we’ve never seen her before. She’s incredible in every way”. She has strong shoulders and wears square-cut jackets in tropical wools, patent fabrics and leather. “I wanted to create something that people would cherish and wear for years to come. The quality of the garments is very impressive,” he said.
