I wish you all a very happy Oscar Sunday! Tonight is the 98th Academy Awards, where the most critically acclaimed films and performers of the last year compete for Hollywood’s highest honors.
Among the projects up for grabs? Ryan Coogler’s epic sinnerThe film received 16 nominations, breaking the previous record All about Eve (1950), Titanic (1997), and la la land (2016), each obtained 14. Among them was Paul Thomas Anderson’s one battle after anotherwhich includes nominations for the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Teyana Taylor and Anderson herself (13 in total). frankenstein, Marty Supreand emotional value A tie of nine, including a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Jacob Elordi and a Best Actor nomination for Timothée Chalamet (also nominated last year for the 2024 film) Completely unknown), and the talented Renate Reinsve’s first Best Actress nomination. And then there are Hamnet (eight nods), with its sensitive direction from Ting Zhao (who this year became the second woman to be nominated twice for Best Director (after Jane Campion)), and a brilliant performance from Jessie Buckley.
If, by the end of the night, one of the two categories looked fairly predictable, most of the rest – from Best Picture (Obama or sinner? Choose Your Fighter) to Best Actor (does Michael B. Jordan’s win in the Actors category foreshadow future dissatisfaction with Chalamet?), Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress – let’s be honest, we didn’t have a choice.
