Summer is right around the corner, and you know what that means: we’re dreaming of beach days. For some New Yorkers, a trip to the beach means driving (or taking a jitney or the Long Island Rail Road) to the east end of Long Island for a weekend, slipping into a world of biking, swimming pools, breweries, farm stands and barbecue. Maybe you’re lucky enough to have a home there, or maybe you’re one of the many people hoping for an invitation from a friend (or some tenuous connection) – to exchange wine, flowers, good manners and good spirits for a weekend away from the city heat.

For anyone who loves the Hamptons (or longs to spend more time there), one of the most appealing aspects of the area is what lies beyond those manicured hedges. What architectural marvels and charming, renovated beach huts are located on this private cul-de-sac?
We may never know. Fortunately there is a new book Hampton interiorWritten by Jennifer Ash Rudick and photographed by Tria Giovan, shares a peek at some of the Hamptons’ most stunning homes, as well as snapshots of diverse personalities, living and decorating styles.
“The Hamptons have been a part of my life since the mid-1980s, when I first lived with a friend in a rambling shingle-style house on Main Street in East Hampton,” Ruddick said Fashion. She had just returned from studying abroad in Europe and was “struck by the Americananess of the place,” with “whitewashed Louis XVI chairs covered in blue ticks and a Picasso sketch hanging next to the menu of a long-closed restaurant.” She adds that Ruddick valued “authenticity over spectacle” when choosing the homes featured in the book. “A house must be a true reflection of the people who live in it.”
“The Hamptons means different things to a lot of people, but at its best, it’s a solid community, a community with long memories and layered history,” Ruddick said. “I hope these photos and stories become part of the record, building a shared sense of identity and belonging for everyone who loves this place, whether they have been here for generations or discovered it last summer.”
