At the Kentucky Derby, all eyes are on the horses. As they raced on the historic track at Churchill Downs, the world watched, mesmerized by what has been called “the most exciting two minutes in sports.” But for photographer Lili Kobielski, the real action is elsewhere: in the stands.
The Kentucky Derby, held annually on the first Saturday in May, may be the most famous horse race in the world, but it’s also known for its style. “There’s really nothing like it,” said Kobilski, who grew up around motorsports and has been photographing the Derby for Vogue magazine for more than a decade. “I particularly love the diversity of horse racing spectators and the enthusiasm of the crowds. The energy here is electric and the huge hats, colorful costumes and incredible characters make it an endlessly engaging theme.”
Now, Kobilski has collected the best of the more than 15,000 photos she took at the event in a new book, The Derby: Kentucky’s Biggest Fashion Celebration.
In her first Derby report for Vogue in 2014, Kobielski focused on Rosie Napravnik, the only female jockey that year, and, of course, all the fun Derby fashion. “I love a variety of looks, from subtle and chic to completely quirky,” she says. “It’s impossible to get bored taking pictures here.”
Today, in honor of the 152nd Kentucky Derby, here are some of our favorite shots from Kobilski’s time at the track over the years.
