In Aespa’s new music video for “Lemonade,” the title track from their second studio album released today, the K-pop girl group swaps out its signature 3K aesthetic for a modern twist.
The colorful shift dress, voluminous hair and fluttering eyelashes will wow fans as it ties in with fashion, matrixThe images that Karina, Giselle, Winter and NingNing have been creating since their debut in 2020. But the change reflects an overall evolution of Aespa’s style.
“I think a lot of people know Aespa and like our sharp and futuristic sound,” says leader Karina Fashion. “But as lemonadewe wanted to push that feeling even further. We’ve always referred to it as a more “sour” version of Aespa – still very much like us, but with a stronger, more exciting flavor. “
Aespa’s artist visual team explained that the inspiration behind the 1950s-inspired fashion came directly from the retro feel of the title track and the parallel world depicted in the video. (After all, this is a group that likes strong narrative concepts.) But in other ways, “Lemonade” is a quintessential Aespa song—a catchy anthem of self-empowerment in the same vein as previous hits like “Rich Man” and “Whiplash.”
“I think lemonade What’s really important is not letting the outside noise affect you too much,” Gisele said. “No matter how chaotic things get, it’s important to stay true to yourself and move forward with confidence. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. “
This kind of message is fitting for a girl group that seems to be constantly escalating. Just this month, Karina and Ningning made their Met Gala debut; this summer, Aespa will compete with Lollapalooza, marking another major milestone.
“We’re preparing something special that fans will see here for the first time,” Winter said, teasing their holiday set. “We are very excited about this and can’t wait to share this moment with everyone in Chicago.”
Shortly after playing Lolla, the band will head to Seoul to begin their next world tour, titled Synk: Complaexity. The members will return to the United States in the fall to perform on stages across the country.
“We are preparing a lot of new performances and different sides of Aespa that we haven’t shown before,” Ningning said. “The production and visual effects are also on a much larger scale this time around, so I’m really excited for everyone to finally experience it and see what we’ve been working on.”
