Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan on the End of ‘Outlander’

You both always say you have each other’s backs. Are there any such examples? How do you balance each other on set? I feel like your temperaments are different.

Balfe: [Laughs.] Yes, I pop. Sam stayed calm.

Heughan: This is complementary. I’ve been feeling weirdly protective of you since the first episode. And then seeing you grow into the strong Claire…that’s always been part of Jamie’s need to protect. I don’t know if it’s the character’s fault or my fault, but it works really well. I can also guide her in a direction and give her energy… [He mimics something being shot off.]

Balfe: Sam loves to stir. If he wants something to happen or doesn’t like something, he’ll whisper, “Oh yeah, you should say something,” and then, because I’m an idiot…

Heughan: No, not at all. You are a person of action. But, you know, there’s trouble with this one…it’s always the corpse. We have a silly sense of humor and sometimes that’s where I fail. We are very lucky.

Balfe: I think our friendship is probably one of the things I’m most proud of about the whole show. [They hug.] It’s true. We are all competitive people, but we are not competing with each other. We always make sure to talk to each other.

Heughan: We were on this show for over ten years. We all go through things in our personal lives, both on and off set. Caitriona would know immediately if something happened. In those moments she was there for me and would protect me in some way, more than she needed to…like a sister.

Balfe: Really? So shameless. Only six months. One time I actually took one for the team. You’re on set and you get a message that upsets you and I jump up and yell, “I have to go to the bathroom!” and everyone’s like, Does she have diarrhea? I let everyone think I had this for you.

Heughan: Do you have it? very nice!

Let’s talk about the future. You have all said, about Outlander Was the movie Never Say Die actually discussed?

Heughan: No.

Balfe: Not with me, no.

Diana is working on finishing book 10. Would you two consider voicing an audiobook?

Balfe: So iconic. Davina Porter has done it before and she is synonymous with this series.

Heughan: Well, they just made one. Christine [Atherton, who played Jenny in Season 7] took over. But it would be nice to hear everyone’s voices and be together again.

Balfe: It is not necessary to wear a corset. You can do it all in your pajamas.

Caitríona, how has Sam changed and grown as an actor over the years? Have you seen his latest macbeth?

Balfe: I did see him macbethhe’s awesome.
