Michael Kors has big plans for his 40th anniversary. Photos from his fall 2021 show looked glamorous — Shalom Harlow, Naomi Campbell, Carolyn Murphy and more wore shimmering jersey evening gowns — but there was no audience at the show due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown. In five years, you can expect a dramatic performance at his 45th anniversary celebration at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. Ahead of the landmark moment, the designer sat down to reflect on his favorite pieces Fashion images and reflect fashionable life. “We have to reflect the times we’re in, and that’s the designer’s job, but at the same time, when you look at these photos, the connecting thread of four and a half years is there,” he said. “How do you be consistent and inconsistent at the same time? To me, that’s the magic of longevity.”

“This is my first time Fashion. This is my first resort collection, all white and consistent sizes. I was like, okay, why do we need dimensions? Everything will be easy and effortless. We shot in my loft, setting up this combo: I lived on the futon in the back next to the rolling rack, and we brought the clothes to the store next to the sewing machine and cutting table. This is done in the front, which is the living room/showroom. These are the shoes I have in the showroom. I have two pairs of shoes. There is no choice. What I really like about it is that there’s so much joy in the picture. I mean, we had a lot of fun. There’s not this sense of melancholy that I think can be so heavy on fashion sometimes. And the clothes are so sleek and streamlined that, honestly, if you changed the model’s hair and put on new shoes, you know you’d be wearing the same clothes to a game now.
