Centre Pompidou Gives Up Grand Palais Area for ‘Financial Constraints’

The Pompidou Center has given up one of its two spaces in the Grand Palais due to “financial constraints faced by both institutions,” according to the Paris museum. Le Monde.

The Pompidou has been using two exhibition spaces within the Grand Palais, while the main base of the Museum of Modern Art is closed for renovations. The Pompidou’s Lost Space is the smaller of the two, but it’s used for programming that’s still compelling.

In fact, this fall, as museums across Paris celebrate the bicentenary of photography, the Center Pompidou plans to host an exhibition on the medium of photography in an 86,000-square-foot space known as Gallery 8. Le Monde Reports say the show will no longer take place.

According to reports, one of the reasons for this shift is Le MondeExhibitions held in Gallery 8 lack attendance, such as the Art Brut collection owned by filmmaker Bruno Decharme. The Grand Palais also reportedly faces a financial shortfall of about 10 million euros ($11.6 million) until 2025; recent renovations also went over budget.

Didier Fusillier, President of the Grand Palais Le Monde “There is no turf war” with Pompidou, adding, “How can the Grand Palais be run in a sustainable way? That’s the question we have to ask ourselves now, not ten years from now.”

Pompidou representative told Le Monde “Given the financial constraints faced by both institutions, it was mutually decided to focus the collaboration on a major touring exhibition, which will host an exhibition of Matisse and Cézanne in 2026.”

The Hilma af Klint survey organized by Pompidou – the first to be conducted in Paris – is currently underway at Gallery 8 and is scheduled to open in May. The exhibition continues to appear on the Pompidou’s website, although it is not listed on the Grand Palais’ website, which does list an upcoming Matisse exhibition opening on March 24.
