Happy New Year! When the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, most of us will scream. Some of us may be attending a wild party with a glass of champagne in hand; others may be comfortably at home watching TV and taking pleasure in avoiding the crowds. Whatever your plans are, though, you’ll probably still be wearing something a little flashy—after all, wearing sequins is half the fun of ringing in 2026. But what about me? I would rather be caught dead than wear sequins this holiday season. Hear me out.
I’m not like the Holiday Grinch or anything. I’m also excited for the New Year! I just hate being told what to wear, or conforming to a uniform that everyone else wears. Glittery crystals and dazzling metallics are the unofficial New Year’s Eve dress code, and the thing is, I already wear both of these pieces a lot. I make New Year’s costumes all year round. At the office, I regularly stroll around in metallic Saint Laurent boots. For fun time with friends, I change into grosgrain-trimmed pants and a velvet blazer. Yes, I’m bragging – I don’t even need a vacation to dress stylishly! sue me
Well, at the end of the year, the idea of wearing a disco ball outfit seems a bit anticlimactic. While you wear sequins on a regular Tuesday, wearing them to send off the New Year feels, well, Tired. Don’t you deserve to feel like a new person as we enter 2026? I think a New Year’s look should be completely new and unexpected. No, I don’t mean those Do Embracing the dazzling style of No. 31 is all about basics. If you’re feeling fresh for the big night, go for it! But for me, I wanted to try something with actual color grading down And try a new fashion vibe together.
So, what exactly should a glitzy fashion lover like me wear when the countdown begins? I would say the first thing to consider is the atmosphere and location of your New Year’s Eve. I’ll be ringing in 2026 seeing Robyn in concert in Brooklyn, so I’m thinking of a darker, more transparent, sexier vibe. I happened to have a Jean Paul Gaultier mesh top that I wanted to pair with my favorite black dress pants. To me, this feels like a look worth celebrating – heading into 2026 with something I wouldn’t normally wear, like a new fashion identity or a new version of myself. Plus, I can always put my sequins back on on January 1st.
