Industry Moves for June 3, 2026

Happy Wednesday! Here’s a roundup of the moves and shakers in the art trade this week.

  • Makeda won the title of Best Chief Curator of Photography at MoMA: The curator comes from the Oakland Museum of California, where she served as associate director. Best will fill a position that has been vacant at MoMA for nearly four years. She starts in September.
  • Dawn Airey appointed Chair of Arts Council England: The former chief executive of Getty Images and Channel 5, who also held senior roles at Sky and ITV, will lead the UK’s main public arts funding body.
  • Rana Begum joins Lehmann Maupin: The London-based artist’s practice, which draws on the history of geometric abstraction, will debut at Art Basel this June. Her first solo exhibition with the gallery will be held in New York this September.
  • Experimenter Announces Generator Collaborative Art Production Fund’s 10th Round Recipients: Calcutta Gallery’s Fund has awarded production grants to 15 artists and groups. Since 2020, it has supported 110 artists.
  • Freeman’s appoints Muys Snijders as CEO: The auction and art consulting veteran joins Freeman immediately, bringing more than 25 years of experience. She previously held senior positions at AIG Private Client Group, Christie’s and Bonhams Auctioneers.

The price achieved was more than 10 times the high estimate of $50,000, and it was just one of several interesting sales in a category that has continued to show new vitality in recent years as collectors turn back to artists with established markets.
