Believe it or not, its fitted silhouette and off-the-shoulder cut were quite daring for the time, and at least a departure from the austere conventions of royal attire. The idea of a revenge dress quickly became a sartorial icon for the beginning of a new phase of life, with other famous examples following suit, such as the sexy Calvin Klein two-piece suit worn by Mariah Carey at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, or the low-cut Valentino gown worn by Elizabeth Hurley in 2000.
