Of all the celebrity manicure trends popping up this summer, chiffon manicures may be the most unexpected. In a sea of polka dots, gemstones and metallic embellishments, ultra-sheer nails challenge the otherwise minimalist mood. Worn by celebrities including Gemma Chan and Gracie Abrams, the minimalist style was a recurring theme at this year’s Met Gala. Named for its delicate chiffon-like effect, celebrity manicurist Michelle Class breaks down why this simple style is so popular.
“Celebrities, especially, are often photographed in different outfits, events and events, so a clean, sheer manicure is perfect for any occasion,” says Class. “It feels expensive, timeless and photogenic.”
Characterized by well-prepared nails—with no rough cuticles, edges, or hangnails in sight—plus a smooth, sheer coat of nail polish, a chiffon manicure is essentially the equivalent of your own nails, but on their best day. Color-wise, chiffon manicure includes any color that is transparent enough to allow the nail underneath to be seen. It can be apricot, peach, soft pink or cream.
