Blurred Skin: This Soft-Focus Makeup Trend Suits Every Skin Type and Texture

While dewy skin and glassy complexions dominated last year’s red carpets and New Year’s resolutions, the biggest beauty trend of 2026 is more diffused and soft-focused: Enter the “blurred skin” trend.

What is blurry skin?

Blurred skin is the polar opposite of last season’s allegiance to smooth, buttery skin. Dominic Skinner, director of makeup artistry at MAC Cosmetics in the UK, has noticed that the pendulum of beauty trends is shifting more toward makeup styles between matte and dewy, a concept he initially called “cloud skin.” He shared this idea Fashion, Born from wondering how to recreate the fluffy, soft texture of clouds on your face.

“I was looking for a lighter product that would give a flawless look without heavy coverage,” adds Skinner, who describes it as “the perfect blur with a light-as-air texture.”

“It’s a trend that’s focused on creating a perfect, balanced complexion,” adds Armani Beauty makeup artist Samuel “Sammy” Rivera, noting that the complexion is “diffuse and smooth.”

What products do I need to improve blurred skin? How to use them?

The first step is always skin care. “I probably spend more time on skin care than I do on makeup,” says Skinner, noting that the more you massage, nourish and hydrate your skin, the more even its texture and tone will be, and the less product you’ll need to use.

When it comes to the actual look, there are a few different ways to achieve what Skinner describes as “perfect blur.” His technique starts with a hydrating primer, then foundation. Layering the two products together creates a “soft but radiant effect,” he says.

Rivera also recommends using a hydrating primer, but he prefers pairing it with a lightweight, buildable coverage foundation. “I wouldn’t use a full-coverage foundation because at the end of the day, you want to use minimal product and you want to respect the skin,” Rivera points out. “You want your skin to look perfect but natural.” He recommends applying the product with your hands, as the warmth helps foundation blur, and using a small amount of powder in the center of your face.

Your skin texture also affects how you achieve the blurring effect. “If you have dry skin, then go for a hydrating primer because that will really help your skin, but then go for a matte foundation,” Skinner explains. If you have oilier skin, he recommends using a more oil-controlling primer, paired with foundation or serum foundation.
